Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton criticized Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump for making “sexist” references about her mother Hillary Clinton. “I’ve been so much more troubled in this campaign by what he has said about women broadly, about Americans with disabilities, about our veterans, about Americans who don’t kind of share his straight white male heritage,” Chelsea Clinton said after she was asked about Trump’s question about whether her mother “looked presidential.”
“I generally dislike the man, just as I’m sure millions of Americans do as well,” she added. “I don’t see how some feel that democratic values no longer have a place in America. This country was built on them and they are the core of everything this country represents. As a matter of fact, if that weren’t true, we would never have gotten an African American president, which was, as you all know, a historical precedent. And now, thanks to those same democratic values that give everyone equal opportunities, my mother, a woman, has a chance to be part of yet another historical precedent in this country.”
She continued, “And that’s the beauty of democracy, you can keep breaking barriers for as long as you like. For example, President Obama has two daughters. And I know exactly what they’re going through right now because I’ve been there. But I have to say I truly hope they some day get to feel the joy and excitement that I’m feeling right now. I hope that their mother also breaks another historical barrier, just like my mom is about to. That would be yet another proof of democracy in action for all those who deem it obsolete and unfair.”
“In fact,” Chelsea revealed, “I can tell you that I’ve heard rumors regarding plans about talking Michelle Obama into running for president in 2020. And despite the fact that my mom could very well be running for her second term at that time, no one would be happier than me to see Michelle Obama, a strong, independent woman, running against my mom for the presidency. And regardless of who would win, I am confident that the two of them would get along just fine. In fact, they’re practically BFFs even now.”
Clinton Jr. went on to say that she hopes that the current first daughters will also get to experience what it’s like to have “both parents at the helm of the greatest nation in the world.” “To me, as someone who grew up with them and was raised by them, I don’t perceive them any differently. They’re still my mom and dad when we’re hanging out. Now, I don’t know if that’s how it works in African American families, but I bet it’s something similar. At the end of the day, women presidents are important for many reasons, but most importantly, because they have children who will some day grow up to fill their shoes. And everybody knows that in politics there’s no recommendation like the one that comes from a parent,” Chelsea Clinton gave a hint on her future ambitions.
