When I saw this cafe owner’s courageous act of patriotism, I knew she was in desperate need of our prayers.
5 Mile Cafe in Penfield, New York is a family-owned restaurant known not only for serving breakfast any time of the day, but also their patriotism.
The establishment is covered in American flags and patriotic decor 365 days a year, making it a truly inspiring sight to see.
When owner Jennifer Aquino was forced to take down her ‘God Bless America’ banner, she responded in the best way ever. Here’s what happened…
Jennifer requested a town permit so she could display a “God Bless America” banner on the front of her restaurant. A proud patriot, Jennifer was hoping to hang the banner from Memorial Day through Independence Day. However, there was just one HUGE problem.
The town of Penfield has a strict banner allotment policy that prohibits businesses from displaying banners for more than a total of three weeks out of the year — and Jennifer had already used up her allotment, so her request was declined.
“At one point we had banners all over the town and the town just looked trashy and our residents said enough’s enough,” town supervisor Tony LaFountain said.
Jennifer refused to feel defeated, so she decided to post the ‘God Bless America’ banner inside of the restaurant instead of the outside. However, Jennifer’s attitude change after the Orlando terrorist attack.
“I decided on my way to work that I was going to put it up, regardless of the town telling me I couldn’t,” she said. “So I put it up.”
Shortly after Jennifer’s courageous act of patriotism, she received an email from the town telling her to remove the banner with threats to face a possible fine for violating the ordinance. What Jennifer did next restored my hope for America — this really blew my mind.
“I didn’t take it down and I was willing to pay the fine,” Jennifer said.
“The [message on the banner] means a lot to me – especially during this time in our country with all that’s going on with terrorism. I just can’t believe that I can’t have this banner up and be supported by the town board,” she explained.
Lord knows we could all use a reminder of the sentiment behind “God Bless America.” However, the town board refuses to support Jennifer’s patriotic banner.
“The fact that I’m being asked to take it down is wrong. It’s against my First Amendment rights. People need to open up their eyes. If we start letting them tell us we can’t do this – it’s going to get worse,” Jennifer said.
Despite the town board’s disapproval, many locals seem to agree with Jennifer’s sentiment. However, Jennifer revealed she never imagined there would be a day like this in America — where you can be punished for simply being patriotic.
“I have lots of veterans in my family,” she said. “I have a cousin who fought in Desert Storm so that we could have the freedom to hang a banner that says, ‘God bless America.’”
